Coming Home
Congratulations on your new puppy!  When you arrive home with your puppy be calm and place him/her on the kitchen floor.  Sit with your puppy and allow for exploring.  If you have small children make sure they sit calmly and allow puppy to come to them.  Never chase the puppy.  Offer a soft toy if pup play bites. Place newspapers in tray and show puppy.  Your puppy is a BABY and it is up to you to learn the signals for needing to potty.  Offer food and water.  When puppy seems tired place in crate and close door.  Turn on sound machine or place ticking clock very near.  If puppy cries allow some time for self calming, if puppy continues to fuss try taking potty then hold for a few minutes.  Repeat crate time.  If you allow puppy to cry it should learn to settle down in crate and sleep.  Puppy may have one or two accidents in crate, but should soon be able to hold it for up to 4 hours.  As soon as pup wakes, take pup to the potty spot.  Praise! After pup is 12-14 weeks it can go about 6 hours.  I use an animal water bottle attached to the crate for supplemental water.  Always keep plenty of fresh water for puppy when out of the crate.   Your puppy will sleep about 75% of the time at first.  Puppy should eat 3 times a day, have tootsie roll type stools and be playful when awake.
It will take about 3 days for your puppy to adjust to coming home.  On day 3 you will see the personality of your puppy coming to life.  Have fun! Play biting is normal but must be discouraged. Give a soft toy when play biting.  Use a firm "no" then offer toy.  Always monitor your puppy.  Puppies will chew anything as well as eat unsafe objects.
When the puppy starts to potty calmly place on papers and praise.  When an accident happens react calmly with a "no" and place puppy on papers while praising.  Absorb with papers and place the soiled papers on the tray.  The scent will help train the pup to use the papers.
A crucial step is to teach your precious bundle what you expect in a firm loving manner. Find reliable training information on raising Bichons.  Also feel free to e-mail me for tips and talk. Bichons are unique.  Training them properly is essential to a long, happy relationship with your new pet.
I hope this basic stater information is helpful.  E-mail with specific questions and I will do my best to help you.
